Edward Kmett discusses parsing programs in parallel and incrementally using semigroup actions and inverse semigroups to build language servers.

October Boston Haskell Meetup @ ThoughBot Well known Haskell guru Edward Kmett speaking about parsing programs (with Haskell-like syntax) in parallel and incrementally by making some small changes to the grammar. Talk provides a nice whirlwind tour of semigroup actions, inverse semigroups and a bunch of less well-known bits of algebra that have a lot of applications. meetup.com/Boston-Haskell/events/244136649/

Monoidal Parsing in Build Language Servers by Edward Kmett

Yeah! You always want your lexer to be in a known state at the start of a line. Some time ago I saw a talk from Ed Kmett where he talks at length about being able to parse a file in chunks (in parallel, or in an IDE) and concatenate them on the way out. Various parsing tasks can be handled with a monoid (balancing parentheses, handling source locations). Those which can’t don’t make it into the language!
