Derek Muller explains why AI cannot bypass the effortful repetition required for human learning, drawing on cognitive science and past educational technology shifts.

AI is advancing faster than anyone predicted—and it’s already reshaping industries around the world. But what does that mean for education? In this livestream, @veritasium's Derek Muller explores how AI might change how we teach and learn, drawing on insights from past tech shifts and core principles of cognitive science. While AI presents exciting opportunities, it also introduces real risks—especially when it comes to how our brains build knowledge and expertise. Join us for a thought-provoking conversation about the future of education in an AI-powered world. About the Speaker Derek Muller is a science communicator, filmmaker, and the creator of the popular YouTube channel @veritasium. With a PhD in physics education, he’s spent over a decade creating videos that challenge misconceptions and make complex science accessible. He’s also hosted documentary series like Uranium – Twisting the Dragon’s Tail and contributed to Bill Nye Saves the World on Netflix. 📅 Stay in the loop: Sign up for our newsletter: landing.perimeterinstitute.ca/newsletter-signup 🔬 Support science: Donate to Perimeter: perimeterinstitute.ca/info/donors Follow Perimeter Institute: Facebook: facebook.com/pioutreach Instagram: instagram.com/perimeterinstitute LinkedIn: linkedin.com/company/perimeter-institute Perimeter Institute (charitable registration number 88981 4323 RR0001) is the world’s largest independent research hub devoted to theoretical physics, created to foster breakthroughs in the fundamental understanding of our universe, from the smallest particles to the entire cosmos.

What people say. Recommended for its balanced take on how AI affects education, arguing that true learning requires cognitive effort that technology cannot replace.

On “ChatGPT Is a Gimmick”

If anyone is interested in AI in relation to learning, I think the best take on that I've seen so far was from Derek (Veritasium) in this recent talk: link to this video It's a lot more balanced compared to the doomy attitude in the primary post.

On “Why I'm Skeptical About Efforts to Revolutionize Schooling”

Derek Muller from the Veritasium channel gave a great (and funny) talk1 about how AI will not revolutionize education and I'll quote my favorite part: "The world is full of heavy objects; yet not everyone is ripped". Meaning that what fails with AI in education is also what fails in education without AI: lack of motivation that a good coach could provide. 1 link to this video

This excellent presentation (Veritasium) is making much the same point (learning comes from “reps”). link to this video

On “Why Sal Khan's AI revolution hasn't happened yet, according to Sal Khan”

Derek Muller of Veritasium has a presentation on why the promises of a revolution in education are never fulfilled. 0 His hottest take is we're already close to the optimal process for learning, so technology isn't going to improve it. Learning takes work, and no technology can do the work for you. 0 link to this video

On “Please Use AI”

I am reminded of Veritasium: What Everyone Gets Wrong About AI and Learning (original video link to this video ) from a year ago. "The world is full of heavy things, and yet most of us aren't ripped." AI is an opportunity. On the one hand, it can be used to let our minds and social lives atrophy. On the other hand, it is an opportunity to help our minds grow. Most people will make the lazy choice. But you can choose to do otherwise. Take, for example, speeches. I do not let AI write my speeches. But my speeches are better for having been critiqued by AI. But the result is still my speech. My thoughts, my ideas, my words, and my meaning. Just improved with rounds of feedback about where it fell flat, wh…
