Databases and dataPostgresMySQLDatabase internals

A comparison highlighting historical data validation and transaction issues in MySQL and how PostgreSQL handles them.

This video highlights many of the strange issues underlying MySQL - and how those problems are handled by Postgres. Our goal is to answer the question: "Why Postgres and not MySQL?". This is episode 2 of Tekpub's Hello Postgres production - given to the community for free.

On “What are your experiences with PostgreSQL?”

Specific examples? Out of the box, MyISAM was the default table engine for most of its life, which means no enforced FK constraints and no transactions. I believe the default may have changed, but it belies a fearsome attitude; at some point, someone thought "let's have the faster but less safe one the default". This video gives a bunch of examples where MySQL will silently smoke your data rather than Do The Right Thing(TM). Again, it's the attitude that doing the factually incorrect thing is OK, which is wrong. Again... you can, I think, change this behaviour, but this behaviour is f**king *wrong* and shouldn't be allowed, ever. Until very recently, you couldn't have fulltext indices on…

Historically it was very lax on data validation, see link to this video Now it has better behavior.
