HardwareCareers and interviewsThe tech industry

An investigation into how volatile US tariffs affect PC hardware manufacturers, supply chains, and the cost of computing components.

SUPPORT GAMERSNEXUS' REPORTING: Grab a Paper Launch shirt store.gamersnexus.net/products/paper-launch-cotton or PC building Modmat store.gamersnexus.net/products/large-modmat-gn15-anniversary (or one of many other items on our store). This deep-dive investigation digs into the impact on the computer industry by volatility from frequent tariffs changes in the US market. We travel the US and make some calls to the EU to learn about how tariffs changes and rates are affecting various businesses, including those which already manufacture their own goods in the US and Canada. We spoke with independent freight forwarders, computer part manufacturers, computer building factories, Canadian and US-based case building factories, downstream manufacturers, and more about the real-world consequences of the current tariffs policies instituted by the US Government. Features @der8auer-en (Thermal Grizzly) and @rossmanngroup , alongside Hyte, CyberPower, iBUYPOWER, Corsair, Cooler Master, 45 Drives / Protocase, and a freight forwarder from Straight Forwarding. What people say. Recommended for its detailed, real-world breakdown of the financial and logistical impacts of tariffs on hardware companies.

On “Port of Los Angeles says shipping volume will plummet 35% next week”

Gamers Nexus essentially produced a 3-hr doc on how changing tariffs affect the US computer industry: "The Death of Affordable Computing | Tariffs Impact & Investigation" link to this video . Best part is having a product manager show a spreadsheet of costs and margins and explain in real terms ($$$) what tariffs do to their business.

Similarly HYTE, mostly known for their PC cases, gives a remarkably detailed insight, both into their cost structure and how they are impacted by tariffs, in this video: link to this video They also address the question of moving their production to the US.

On “When UPS charged me a $684 tariff on $355 of vintage computer parts”

gamers nexus did a great (and very long) video on the impact of tariffs on US computer businesses. Some of the manufacturers went into quite a bit of detail breaking down their costs and how tariffs would render some products so unprofitable that they would cease to serve the US market. Not sure if it necessarily applies to a niche/low volume business, but the impacts on a larger business were eye opening: link to this video tariffs have chopped and changed so much since this video that the specific tariff amounts mentioned are likely not accurate.

On “Wyze pays $255k of tariffs on $167k of floodlights”

I think the point is kind of moot. I doubt they own any part of their manufacturing at the moment. Unless manufacturing already exists in the US (which I doubt here), I don't believe company this size has any chance to move manufacturing to the US The GamerNexus video already mentioned elsewhere explore those issues: link to this video .
