Samin Zaman explores the cybersecurity risks and real-world attack vectors targeting satellites, ground stations, and space communication links.

BSides Edmonton 2025 Cosmic Threats: An Introduction to Cybersecurity in Space by Samin Zaman Humanity is expanding rapidly into space, sending thousands of satellites into orbit every year. As space infrastructure becomes more integral to telecommunications, emergency services, national defense, and more, it is becoming increasingly important to understand the cyber risks before the attack surface grows too large. This talk will explore these risks and real-world incidents against satellites, ground stations, and communication links. This video was captured using a locked-down, unmanned camera. As a result, there may be moments when speakers are not fully in the camera shot. Additionally, the audio quality captured by the podium microphone is dependent on the proximity of the speaker to the mic. This means that variations in audio clarity may occur if the speaker moves away from the microphone during their presentation. We appreciate your understanding of these technical aspects.
