Derek Wright explains the concept of monads in Haskell and why they are useful for managing side effects.

London Haskell user group, 24th October 2012. A talk by Derek Wright, based on a blog post by Chris Smith. On “Hython: The simplest possible language”

I am unconvinced that explaining monads should be done at all until you have learned how to use a few of them. Once you use the same syntax for IO, Parsing, and State, have done some list comprehensions, and are pretty familiar with type signatures... then maybe you can point out that underneath its just some kind of similar type. Everyone has their own favorite... mine is still the Why Monads Matter talk on youtube, which goes something like this: - Composition is important! - Sometimes, things don't compose perfectly and need some help. - Lets look at examples... - Errors don't quite compose, but we can make an "errorBind" - Things that share an input don't quite compose,…

Yes! The link to this video is finally on YouTube. If you want to look at the the slides there is a PDF with animations for on-screen. A PDF with most of the animations removed for printing. And finally the PowerPoint Presentation with all the animations! Enjoy.

On “For those of you who work in the field, what is a concept that you just cannot wrap your head around?”

…nted by things such as List and Maybe, which don't really resemble closures much at all. For each data type which implements it, these functions might do something slightly different, but they tend to follow a regular pattern that can be abstracted over. The best way to understand (imho) is by examples. I recommend Why Do Monads Matter in text or link to this video form. They discuss how failure, dependence, uncertainty, and side effects break composability, and how it is resolved using a monadic interface.…
