Mike Clark discusses his career at AMD, the origin and development of the Zen CPU architecture, and the future of processor design.

Ian Interviews #11: Mike Clark, AMD Zen Chief Architect We've heard from the Uncle of Zen, now it's time to hear from the father of Zen himself. Mike Clark is a Corporate Fellow at AMD, and has had his hands in almost every CPU from AMD since K5. He finished university in 1993 to work at AMD, and has been there ever since. Time to ask him about the Zen story, CPU design, and the future of AMD. Written version: anandtech.com/show/17031/anandtech-interviews-mike-clark-amd… Intro Q1: Work History Q2: When did Zen really start? Q3: Ability to Pivot Q4: Zen Funding during AMD Struggles Q5: 8am Meetings with Keller Q6: Father of Zen? Q7: The Naming of Zen and Ryzen Q8: About Skybridge Q9: Sign-off and Low Hanging Fruit Q10: More Money, More Roadmaps? Q11: Zen 5, or Zen 8? Q12: Zen A0 Silicon Getting Chilly Q13: How Do You Find That Out? Q14: Core Decode Width Limits in x86 Q15: Predicting workloads 4+ years out Q16: What's the right amount of cache? Q17: Virtual L3 considerations? Q18: Stacked L3 Cache Q19: Machine Learning in EDA Tools Q20: How big can a CCX be? Q21: Will Xilinx acquisition change Ryzen? On “Sam Zeloof and Jim Keller start a new semiconductor fab”

Check out this interview with the actual architect of Zen, Mike Clark. link to this video Probably the most interesting nugget is that Zen2 was actually considered a tweak internally and not a full uarch revision, while Zen3 is actually the clean-sheet revision. But it's just a good summary of the general tone and tempo of CPU development I think.

On “Apple Unveils M2”

…the end of the day, it's really about microarchitecture.” In the end, ISA is such a small part that impacts the design of a modern high performance CPU that it is almost negligible. It is physically impacting only the decode unit, but the decode unit is only a few percent of die area. Feel free to listen to the whole interview to get a feeling. 1: link to this video…

On “Sam Zeloof and Jim Keller start a new semiconductor fab”

…. Like god damn can someone else in the industry have some ideas of their own please, lol /s And again not that other people aren't involved either, in particular Mike Clark was really the guy who executed Zen development, but Keller was there at least as an advisor for a lot of the early development. He's one of Zen's uncles, Clark is the father. link to this video I think it also says a lot that he completely fucking bailed from Intel after only being there a couple months... I think he saw they just weren't ready/willing to execute well and his time would be wasted there. He's the wandering silicon samurai who drops some golden nuggets of advice and wanders off into the sunset, not a babysitter whil…

On “AMD signs AI chip-supply deal with OpenAI, gives it option to take a 10% stake”

Actually, Mike Clark is the 'father of Zen': link to this video . When Jim came along, Zen design was mostly finished already. Another honorable mention would be Suzanne Plummer
