Loris Cro discusses the design goals of Zig, its competition with C and Rust, and the Zig Foundation's long-term vision.
Zig is a programming language that’s attempting to become “the new C” - the language of choice for low-level systems programming and embedded hardware. Going into that space not only puts it in competition with C and C++, but also other newcomers like Rust and Go. So what makes Zig special? Joining us to discuss it is Loris Cro from the Zig Foundation. We talk through Zig’s reasons to exist, its language design features, which parts of the C ecosystem it's tackling, and how the Zig Foundation is set up for the long-term health of the language. – Loris’ website: kristoff.it/ Kris on Twitter: twitter.com/krisajenkins Kris on LinkedIn: linkedin.com/in/krisjenkins/ Zig homepage: ziglang.org/ The “learn zig” guide: ziglearn.org/ Learn Zig with Ziglings: ziglings.org/ Find the Zig community: github.com/ziglang/zig/wiki/Community Rust’s cargo-zigbuild: github.com/rust-cross/cargo-zigbuild Using zig as a better linker: andrewkelley.me/post/zig-cc-powerful-drop-in-replacement-gcc… "The Economics of Programming Languages" by Evan Czaplicki (Strange Loop 2023) - youtu.be/XZ3w_jec1v8 – Intro Podcast Outro #programming #programminglanguages #software #zig #ziglang #llvm #rust #goWhy it's here

Considering learning Zig but wondering about the long-term trajectory of the project
So I recently watched this podcast discussing the Zig programming language. I was intrigued by the semantics, but I noticed that Zig puts a huge amount of effort into its build system and compiler toolchain (rebuilding LLVM and such) for such a new language. It makes me worry that Zig is a compiler project with a language attached rather than a language project with a compiler attached.
There are other areas where the language could use development (I was intimidated by the sparse documentation, and the unclear package management system), so I found this focus concerning. Rebuilding the LLVM doesn't nece…

On “Is zig here to stay?”
A language needs paid core team, a bus team, stable funding, among other things, Loris C covers all that

On “Is there a "senior" member of the zig community I can speak to here?”
Your pull requests are actually meaningless. link to this video in this talk they discuss how zig's legal structure work and the way it's funded. Basically Andrew is the one who makes the decision, there's no community voting. As others have suggested, if you don't like something - just make your own fork
