An audio comparison demonstrating the heavy dynamic range compression and clipping in the retail master of Metallica's Death Magnetic.

*This is the second version of this video, as the volumes had to be adjusted to match.* As many are aware by now, many Metallica fans are displeased with the quality of the retail version of Death Magnetic. Somehow, all the songs have a high amount of clipping or 'brickwalling', as will be seen in this video. Here's a demonstration of The Day That Never Comes, with switches between the retail version, and the GH3 version that somehow escaped this clipping problem. Also note: Youtube isn't exactly the best source for audio, and often adds high amounts of compression and volume normalization, so I can't assure listeners that they will hear what is intended by this video, but hopefully it gives a good idea. Additionally, the GH3 version IS NOT MASTERED, so it is not going to sound as bright and up-front as it could have if it were mastered. There is also small amounts of clipping even in the GH3 version. This is not so much a video for debating which version is better, but rather a video meant to show that the retail's mix is clipping at what many consider to be unacceptable levels. Other info - To match the retail version to GH3's volume, I had to decrease the retail volume by 14DB in comparison. But also take note, GH3's volume from the rip I got is probably lower than it should be, so that number of a 10db difference that everyone on the net has been talking about is probably correct.

Why it's here

What people say. Frequently cited as the definitive, audible proof of the Loudness War and how excessive mastering compression ruins audio quality.

For the unbelievers, listen to Metallica's Death Magnetic first from the official version. After that, try the Guitar Hero version and it'll quite literally blow your mind. A video comparing both: link to this video I tend to get physically and mentally exhausted when I have to listen to music that's maximised for loudness, took me a while to figure that out. A comparison between these two versions was the eye opener for me.

On “Loudness War”

If you don't believe in the Loudness War, or think that you can't hear the difference, here is a challenge for you: Grab Metallica's Death Magnetic. Listen through it all the way. Now find the Guitar Hero III remastered version of the same album, listen through it. I guarantee you feel exhausted after the official master version, because there is no dynamic range, it's just a full spectrum of noise. Here's a Youtube video visualising the difference: link to this video

…erly mastered them just so they could be included in the game without destroying the experience. Guitar Hero's version of Death Magnetic was apparently pirated more times than rips of the authentic release. It was heavily praised for being a more clear, detailed mix, that didn't shove highs under the bus for muddy lows and generally ruined vocals. link to this video for a comparison on the least ruined song on the album, that the author volume matched for the video. The original release had to be decreased 14dB to match the level of the GH3 release for this comparison.…
