A time-lapse showing the process of building a tiny, working computer with an OLED screen embedded inside a LEGO-style brick.

The making of a computer-in-a-brick. I've chopped out sections that went on a bit, but tried to leave in enough of everything to show the whole process. Edited together from a few different builds, so there's some continuity errors with the resin colour at the end. Code for driving the screen in greyscale is here: github.com/AncientJames/uGrey The screen is a 0.42" OLED, available from aliexpress or similar. Yes it runs Doom. youtube.com/watch?v=TJHSMpYi8bg

What people say. Recommended as an impressive and creative demonstration of extreme hardware miniaturization using off-the-shelf components.

On “Ask HN: What is the weirdest or most surreal (recent) technology you have seen?”

A hobbyist made a 2x2 angled LEGO brick with a computer and an OLED display embedded into it: link to this video This is a mind blowing level of miniaturization, especially considering that this was assembled by someone at home with commercially available off-the-shelf parts! The fact that he used a cheap, readily available 3D printer to manufacture the jigs and mould parts is the icing on the cake. When I grew up, computer monitors were heavy and had big vacuum tubes in them made out of thick glass. At the scale of a LEGO brick, it was already amazing having a single LED light instead of an incandescent light bulb! A working computer!? With a display? Madness!

On “Doom on a Volumetric Display [video]”

His stuff is fascinating. He first came to my attention when he built the working LEGO computer bricks, as shown here: link to this video This shows it being built but if you want to see it working, jump to just after 12 minutes.

On “Multivox: Volumetric Display”

An earlier iteration of the same block is imo more impressive in its creativity - link to this video - such an unexpected and yet completely natural extension of the brick set.
