Niall Murphy reflects on the legacy of the Google SRE book, discussing what worked, what failed, and how the industry should adapt reliability models.

Don't Follow Leaders or "All Models Are Wrong (and So Am I)" Niall Murphy, RelyAbility Five years after the publication of the SRE book, it's a good time to reflect on what it did—the good and the bad, the ugly and the beautiful, and relate it to what is going on in production engineering in general, SRE in particular, and the problems in the field we've yet unaddressed and/or created for ourselves. What people say. Recommended for its critical retrospective on the Google SRE book and how to adapt its concepts to other environments.

On “site reliability engineering book by O'Reilly”

It's .. fine. It was never meant to be a full bible of everything SRE. It was a snapshot in time from 20 odd years ago, and a lot of things have changed since then. Not everything in it is applicable to all companies. Hell, 75% of it wasn't applicable to all teams in Google when it was written. And there are better ways to do many things in it than there used to be. A followup talk was done five years back to explain it's limitations, which you don't need to have read through the book to read. Also, second edition is inbound (though Google likely insisted in more propaganda in it, than the original, due to how things have changed over time). link to this video
