Per Liden explains the design, performance, and roadmap of the low-latency Z Garbage Collector in Java.

ZGC: The Next Generation Low-Latency Garbage Collector ZGC is a low-latency garbage collector that can handle terabyte-sized heaps without pausing for more than a few milliseconds. This talk will give on overview of ZGC, what it is, when to use it, and how to get started using it. We'll also peek under the hood to better understand how ZGC actually works, highlight some of the many improvements made to it since its introduction in JDK 11, and finally look at the roadmap for ZGC development going forward. On “What is a 'single-generation' garbage collector in Java?”

…e more quickly and efficiently disposed of to free up memory. ZGC does not “brag” about being single-generational. Quite the opposite, the team has indicated their desire to add generational features in future versions of ZGC. See a discussion in this section of a talk by Per Liden of Oracle (wait a few seconds for new slide “Generational ZGC”): link to this video For more info on generations, see this Question: Java heap terminology: young, old and permanent generations?…

Yes, the JVM has a **very** interesting future indeed: * ZGC, game changing GC, in JDK 15 it already has <10 ms **max** pause time with only a few percent lower throughput than G1. In JDK16 they eliminated the last non-concurrent pauses resulting in **<1 ms max pause time** (and we're talking in 32+ cores, multi TB heap benchmarks!). Amazing! * New vector API in JDK 16: get all the performance benefits of SIMD with easy to use, platform agnostic Java API * Project Loom, basically much better scalability for free with zero or very few code changes * Project Valhalla, value types and generic specialization: get the same performance and memory benefits that C++ and Rust have (finally!) * P…
