Dr. Bernard Widrow demonstrates the magnetic core memory plane technology he co-developed at MIT in the early 1950s.

Dr. Bernard Widrow shows us his Memory Plane, he and his colleagues at MIT developed the first Random Access Memory in 1951-1953. The magnetic core memory plane technology was bought by IBM and first used in the IBM 701 mainframe. Widrow shows us the toroidal magnets, each one equal to one bit. These cards were stacked and used in the Whirlwind Computer.

What people say. Recommended as a rare historical look at early magnetic-core memory technology from one of its creators.
