Eugenia Cheng introduces monads from a category theory perspective, defining them and exploring the monoid monad.

An introduction to monads including the definition and a look at the monoid monad.

On “Monads”

…monads are usually defined by the bind (>>=) operator and return. Either way is sufficient and you can derive them from each other. Similarly, it would suffice to define the composition (>=>) operator instead of bind. An excellent resource for understanding monads from a mathematician's perspective is the Catster's monads presentation on Youtube <link to this video…

On “What are some of the best papers, articles, tutorials, videos, etc that explain monads (in functional programming) in a very gentle and easy to comprehend language?”

Eugenia Cheng (now-former maths professor and category theorist) made some videos back in the day which highlight the idea of monads from a category theory angle: [video No functional programming in the videos, but the idea (monads) is the same across Category Theory monads and Haskell monads.
