Jake Wharton discusses advanced design patterns and language features of Kotlin for Android development.

Using Kotlin for Android development has grown in popularity over the last year. Even to those who are not currently using it, the value proposition of the language immediately resonates. There already are a lot of introductory talks to the language and its extensions for use on Android. This talk will cover advancing the usage and design patterns of the language for Android development to solve larger problems. While the content is targeted at mobile development, there will be value for all Java developers interested in Kotlin. Prior knowledge or use of Kotlin is not required to attend this talk. Some concepts of the language will be used without introduction but they are intuitive and/or quickly learned. Even if you don't fully understand every language concept on which each example is built, the resulting functionality will be clear. Recorded at meetup.com/androidkw/events/226683586/

What people say. Engineers point to this talk for an early, clear explanation of why Android developers should adopt Kotlin over Java.

The short answer is that Kotlin gives us what the current version of Java in Android cannot. Jake Wharton gave a talk just before Kotlin v1.0 was released that summed it up about a minute in. Though Google is working to incorporate stuff from Java 8 into Android, lambdas being one, the truth of the matter is that Android developers will never be able to use the latest and greatest version of Java in their development. The Android SDK just won't let you. Java 9 is around the corner as well, and there's probably a lot of useful stuff in there we'd never get to play with until years down the road. I think Google's adoption of Kotlin as a first-class language was both an acknowledgement of…

How would I go about doing this? Hey. Bit of background. I'm a fairly experienced Android dev, but I've only ever used Java. Got introduced to Kotlin a little while ago by a friend, and thought it was pretty awesome, so I'm trying to learn it. In this video at around 34:23, we get shown a usecase for extension functions. Manually instantiating layouts in code. This looks awesome, but I can't get it working. Is this built into kotlin, or is this something Jake rolled himself? If it's not built in, are their any libs that add the extension methods to make this possible? I tend to do quite a few custom views for various reasons. Normally I'd just context.getLayoutInflater() but this look…
