  • An opinion. It argues one side of a question engineers disagree on.

Intermediate. Assumes working knowledge.

Michael Feathers presents a conceptual framework for reducing error checks and conditional logic to make code easier to reason about.

This presentation was recorded at GOTO Chicago 2018. #gotocon #gotochgo gotochgo.com Michael Feathers - Working Effectively with Legacy Code ABSTRACT Many systems are full of error checks and conditional logic. They introduce discontinuities that make reasoning difficult. In this talk, Michael Feathers will present a conceptual framework for dealing with errors, conditionality and decision making at the level of code, architecture [...] Download slides and read the full abstract here: gotochgo.com/2018/sessions/358 twitter.com/GOTOcon linkedin.com/company/goto- instagram.com/goto_con facebook.com/GOTOConferences #SoftwareArchitecture #RobustCode #ErrorHandling #Patterns #MichaelFeathers CHANNEL MEMBERSHIP BONUS Join this channel to get early access to videos & other perks: youtube.com/channel/UCs_tLP3AiwYKwdUHpltJPuA/join Looking for a unique learning experience? On “You’re better off using Exceptions”

I was watching this the other day: link to this video Unconditional Code by Michael Feathers One solution to this problem is discussed toward the middle: giving data instead of asking for data avoids error conditions. Doing so pushes use of the data farther down the call tree and pulls acquisition up near the top, where we are closer to the user and thus able to more clearly decide what if anything to do about these corner cases.

On “Things Go needs more than generics”

Please no on the Universal nil. Meaningful zero values for types are essential. It may be confusing to some that nil is a valid zero value for some types and not others, in which case that needs to be refined, but having a type that can either be a value, a zero value, or a nil introduces complexity where there should be simplicity. Having a zero value enables, for example, Unconditional Programming: link to this video
