How Google engineers built Kubernetes to orchestrate containers and navigate internal resistance and the container wars.

The official Kubernetes Documentary Part 1. Inspired by the open source success of Docker in 2013 and seeing the need for innovation in the area of large-scale cloud computing, a handful of forward-thinking Google engineers set to work on the container orchestrator that would come to be known as Kubernetes– this new tool would forever change the way the internet is built. These engineers overcome technical challenges, resistance to open source from within, naysayers, and intense competition from other big players in the industry. Most engineers know about “The Container Orchestrator Wars’’ but most people would not be able to explain exactly what happened, and why it was Kubernetes that ultimately came out on top. There is no topic more relevant to the current open source landscape. This film captures the story directly from the people who lived it, featuring interviews with prominent engineers from Google, Red Hat, Twitter and others. Kubernetes exists as a testament to the power of open source software. What people say. Engineers recommend it as an engaging history of how Kubernetes was created and came to dominate the container orchestration space.

On “Why did containers happen?”

…where Kelsey Hightower talks about what he thinks might come after Kubernetes. He mentions, and I thought this was very interesting ... Serverless making a return. It really seemed like Serverless would be "the thing" in 2016-2017 but containers were too powerful. Maybe now with KNative or some future fusing of Container Orchestration + K8S? 1 - link to this video…

On “Kubernetes Documentary: A Critical Review”

Slightly biased? This is the way they present the extract of the dotScale conference in this K8s documentary: link to this video And the source media: link They've altered the quality of the audio and video to make it look old. They even cropped it to 4:3! This is preposterous.

On “Ask HN: If Kubernetes is the solution, why are there so many DevOps jobs?”

Anybody who watched "Kubernetes: The Documentary" knows the answer: link to this video Kubernetes only exists, because Google lost the Cloud Wars, and this was their Hail Mary pass.
