Rob Pike introduces Upspin, an experimental framework for naming and sharing files securely and uniformly across a global namespace.

Upspin is an experimental project to build a framework for naming and sharing files and other data securely, uniformly, and globally: a global name system of sorts. It is not a file system, but a set of protocols and reference implementations that can be used to join things like file systems and other storage services to the name space. Performance is not a primary goal. Uniformity and security are. On “Interview with CEO of rsync.net: “no firewalls and no routers””

If you want to see more on this theme, the Upspin docs1 are a really interesting read. This 2017 talk2 that Rob Pike gave on it is also really good. 1 link 2 link to this video

On “Standard Notes is a safe place for your notes, thoughts, and life's work”

"Encrypt, store, share files on your own terms" is elegantly handled by (Rob Pike's) Upspin. Practically: upspinfs fusermounts a cloud storage bucket. (TCO: $0.01/GB/mo.) Transparent public-key crypto. Sharing is built into the protocol. Sane defaults. link link to this video Building notes on top feels almost too straightforward to monetize. (For that matter: 1password, any number of small-scale B2C things, ...)

On “Willow Protocol”

other commenters have mentioned ipfs, dropbox, syncthing, etc. but this most closely resembles link with the caveat that willow is p2p and upspin uses a centralized key server link to this video

On “Turning Down Upspin Infrastructure”

This saddens me because I think the concept behind Upspin is powerful. Is it really that much of a resource drain to drop the key server? I imagine it could run on a $10/mo VPS. This is the talk that introduced Upspin: link to this video
