On “Creating a 2 hour Rust intro for my university's intro systems class”

I’ve got no specific advice, but you might start by watching the 2-part YouTube series where Jonathan Turner (Rust Core team member and one of the Nu shell authors) introduces Rust to his C++ content creator cousin Jason Turner. It’s not as concise as you’ll want your presentation to be, but you’ll get a sense of how an experienced Rust dev explains Rust to someone coming from a C++ perspective and get an idea from Jason about what things make intuitive sense and which need explaining. Most experienced Rust programmers won’t learn much about Rust from it, but I found it interesting to see Rust through the eyes of someone with a much different programming background from my own. Anyway, if y…

On “Request for Use-Cases for Rust in the Enterprise”

I'm a rust novice for sure but your first point about "if it compiles it probably works" is spot on. At first it felt like a bit of a battle just to get it to compile but I watched a video that adjusted my perspective. It was link to this video , Jason teaches John rust or something. At one point, Jason said: "...it's like having a conversation with the conpiler" and I absolutely feel like thats true. It yells at me whenever I'm sloppy and has the most helpful errors/suggestions. Once the compiler is happy though, it feels like the only issues that come up are logic ones (and I just straight up deserve those). It definitely feels slower to write (maybe I'm just too inexperienced with it) but man doe…

On “Jonathan Turner teaches Jason Turner (the C++ expert) Rust”

At a couple of points in the talk, Jason asked a couple of really fundamental questions about what copying and moving mean in Rust. First at 39m12s: > If I wanted to explicitly move `x` into `y`, can I do that right here? That was referring to this code: let x = 3; let y = x; And then second at 2h27m31s: > Technically this requires that any type passed to it is copyable, right? That was referring to this code: fn generic_function<Type1>(val: Type1) -> Type1 { return val; } I think talking about precisely about what moving and copying means in Rust is informative, especially for a C++ expert trying to learn Rust. I'm not a C++ expert, but I want to give thi…
