Linus Tech Tips demonstrates Intel's Thunderbolt Share technology and Wi-Fi 7 improvements shown at CES 2024.

Check out Wicked Cushions at Amazon: lmg.gg/WickedCushionsAmazon or their website: wickedcushions.com/LTT Intel showed us the goods on probably the single thing I'm most excited about from CES 2024, and it's...Thunderbolt? Seriously, this is so cool. Not only that, but Wi-Fi 7 seems like it will actually be an increase that actually matters to regular people- as well as niche corner-case weridos like me lol Discuss on the forum: linustechtips.com/topic/1552428-this-was-under-nda-until-i-c… ► GET MERCH: lttstore.com ► GET EXCLUSIVE CONTENT ON FLOATPLANE: lmg.gg/lttfloatplane ► SPONSORS, AFFILIATES, AND PARTNERS: lmg.gg/partners ► EQUIPMENT WE USE TO FILM LTT: lmg.gg/LTTEquipment ► OUR WAN PODCAST GEAR: lmg.gg/wanset FOLLOW US ---------------------------------------------------   Twitter: twitter.com/linustech Facebook: facebook.com/LinusTech Instagram: instagram.com/linustech TikTok: tiktok.com/@linustech Twitch: twitch.tv/linustech MUSIC CREDIT --------------------------------------------------- Intro: Laszlo - Supernova Video Link: youtube.com/watch?v=PKfxmFU3lWY iTunes Download Link: itunes.apple.com/us/album/supernova/id936805712 Artist Link: soundcloud.com/laszlomusic Outro: Approaching Nirvana - Sugar High Video Link: youtube.com/watch?v=ngsGBSCDwcI Listen on Spotify: spoti.fi/UxWkUw Artist Link: youtube.com/approachingnirvana Intro animation by MBarek Abdelwassaa instagram.com/mbarek_abdel/ Monitor And Keyboard by vadimmihalkevich / CC BY 4.0  geni.us/PgGWp Mechanical RGB Keyboard by BigBrotherECE / CC BY 4.0 geni.us/mj6pHk4 Mouse Gamer free Model By Oscar Creativo / CC BY 4.0 geni.us/Ps3XfE CHAPTERS --------------------------------------------------- Intro Thunderbolt Share Latency It's not encoded! What people say. Engineers shared this video as one of the few demonstrations of Intel's Thunderbolt Share technology and its performance.

On “I turned my ThinkPad into a programmable USB device”

Linus showed off a really impressive tech demo which accomplishes that: link to this video I would link another source if I can, but there's almost nothing I could find about Thunderbolt Share.

On “High-speed 10Gbps full-mesh network based on USB4 for just $47.98”

Related, Intel was showing off Thunderbolt Share at CES1. Allows Thunderbolt 4/5 device-to-device transfer of files. Theoretical speeds in the 20Gbps and 40Gbps for Thunderbolt four and five respective. One idea for why they were only able to reach 11Gbps is having only one Thunderbolt/USB4 controller2, meaning the two USB4 ports split the 40Gbps PCIe lane. Throw in a full-duplex connection and you get 10Gbps in one direction. 1 link to this video 2 Just a theory but seems like a sane assumption.

On “Intel's Thunderbolt Share is a speedy sneakernet replacement and more”

This was actually shown off at CES earlier this year, here's the only video I can find: link to this video In this it's claimed that Intel is doing a direct framebuffer copy. I'd say the "Microsoft’s Remote Desktop without all of the setup." is editorialising. It's not the clearest shot, but the latency shown at 30s in that video looks pretty good to my eyes. On the other hand I've been caught out by tech companies making exaggerated claims about pre-release products before, so who knows, maybe it actually is no better than VNC.
