Derek Muller explains why many real-world systems follow power laws rather than normal distributions, using simulations of sandpiles, magnetism, and forest fires.

On “Strong earthquake hits northern Japan, tsunami warning issued”

Various scientists in this video. The video is a great watch btw. link to this video (stresses build up and are often released through many small, unfelt earthquakes (25:54). If these small movements don't dissipate the stress, it can accumulate and lead to a powerful chain reaction (26:25) * disclaimer I used YouTube's built-in AI to find/summarize the timestamps, as I couldn't remember offhand where it was when I previously watched this.

On “I'm just having fun”

Glad you mentioned the veritasium video on these. Here is the link: link to this video Before I watched this I would default to thinking about most distributions as normal. It's really fun to think about whatever "game" you are playing - wether you are building a business or trying to win a carnival game - and consider if the results follow a normal distribution or a power law?

On “Five disciplines discovered the same math independently – none of them knew”

3Blue1Brown has a good video on phase transitions. link Veritasium has a good video on how criticality applies to other things too, link to this video

On “Your Key to Success Isn't More Luck or Hard Work”

…le you work with tend to go on to better & bigger things - especially in the beginning of your career, if you are a nice person. Veritasium put out a very nice video1 about knowing which sort of game we're playing. It is a power law game. There are only two takeaways I had, "show up" and "get lucky". There is no winning without showing up. 1 - link to this video…

On “Ilya Sutskever, Yann LeCun and the End of “Just Add GPUs””

> Won't scaling laws apply to it anyway? Yes, of course. Scaling Laws will always apply, but that's not really the point0 The fight was never "Scale is all you need" (SIAYN) vs "scale is irrelevant" it was "SIAYN" vs "Scaling is not enough". I'm not aware of any halfway serious researcher that did not think scaling was going to result in massive improvements. Being a researcher from the SINE camp myself... Here's the thing: The SIAYN camp argued that the transformer architecture was essentially good enough. They didn't think scale was all you needed, but that the rest would me minor tweaks and increasing model size and data size would get us there. That those were the major hurdles. In thi…

On “The AI wildfire is coming. it's going to be painful and healthy”

The text reminded me of one of Veritasium's latest videos 1 about power law, self-organized criticality, percolation, etc... and it also has a wildfire simulation 1 link to this video
