Joel Holder demonstrates how to configure terminal Emacs for full C++ IDE capabilities over a remote SSH connection.

Everything in this video runs over a plain SSH connection to a remote Linux box — no GUI, no forwarded X11, no VS Code Remote extension. Just a terminal, SSH, and Emacs configured as a full C++ IDE. I walk through: • Symbol navigation — jump to definitions across your own code and the C++ standard library, find every reference, and jump back out, all without leaving the keyboard • Refactoring — project-wide rename backed by clangd, not text search-and-replace • Debugging — breakpoints, conditional breakpoints, stepping, live variable inspection, and expression evaluation via DAP (lldb/gdb), fully interactive over a terminal session The point isn't "Emacs is old-school" — it's that terminal + SSH + Emacs is a genuinely fast, lightweight way to work on remote code: no laggy remote-GUI protocol, no heavyweight remote-extension server, works the same whether you're on a fast connection or a rough one. What people say. Recommended as a great walkthrough of setting up a lightweight, terminal-based remote C++ development environment using Emacs.
