Cloud and DevOpsDistributed systemsKubernetesDocker and containersTerraform and infrastructure as code

Kelsey Hightower explains the declarative model of Kubernetes and demonstrates how system administrators can use it to manage containerized infrastructure.

"We need to change the contract between our infrastructure and the application." In this presentation for PuppetConf 2016, software engineer Kelsey Hightower provides an overview of Kubernetes (k8s) and how systems administrators can use it as "a foundation to build the tools that you need to run your infrastructure." Learn how to quickly install, configure, and manage Kubernetes clusters with Puppet: puppet.com/blog/puppet-kubernetes - Introduction and Kubernetes overview - What is Kubernetes? - How Kubernetes and Puppet work together - Kubernetes' declarative nature and the importance of containers - Dockerfiles, container builds, and the challenges of creating self-contained apps - Automated deployments, resource utilization, and Kubernetes' bin-packing algorithm - Kubernetes pods, replication controllers, and service discovery - How replication controllers manage desired states - Running stateful applications and decoupling storage from machines - Demo: Deploying MySQL and a Ruby on Rails app on Kubernetes - Scaling the application from one replica to ten using Kubernetes - How Kubernetes integrates service discovery and load balancing - Using Kubernetes custom extensions to automate certificate management with Let's Encrypt - Adding nginx to the pod, rolling updates, and ensuring secure HTTPS deployment - Final demonstration of the deployed application with a valid Let's Encrypt certificate #kubernetes #sysadmin #cloudcomputing #infrastructuredevelopment

What people say. Highly recommended for Kelsey Hightower's famous Tetris analogy, which perfectly explains the Kubernetes scheduler and resource bin-packing.

Kelsey Hightower comparing the kubernetes scheduler to Tetris was awesome for cementing a mental model. link to this video

What are some deep-dive must-watch Kubernetes videos on youtube? There are bunch of videos related to the topic, but some of them are explaining the concepts better than others. What are some videos that made the "ah-ha" moment for you? I'm talking about technical stuff, that covers more deep things than introduction. For example, few that I encountered lately: [video \- kubernetes deconstructed [video \- life of a packet - kubernetes networking [video \- not too technical, but this is the best intro video to kubernetes imo.

There's a great example on why setting limits is a good thing from one of Kelsey Hightower's talks, for some reason your initial comment triggered remembering this advice: link to this video

On “Technical Debt Is Like a Tetris Game”

Kelsy Hightower has used a similar analogy in regards to resource allocation which covers a little on the tech debt side of things. link to this video
