Jonathan Beri demonstrates how to set up and use Visual Studio Code and Docker for Zephyr RTOS application development.

Zephyr & Visual Studio Code: How to Develop Zephyr Apps with a Modern, Visual IDE - Jonathan Beri Visual Studio Code (or VS Code) has become a very popular developer environment for frontend and backend projects. But increasingly, embedded developers are turning to this tool too. “How do I get started with Visual Studio Code” is the most asked question in the Zephyr community Discord server. Out of the box VS Code isn’t setup up for embedded development but by leveraging extensions, supporting tools and the right configs, it can be a powerful IDE for you to use while building Zephyr apps. This talk we’ll cover the current state of Zephyr support in VS Code and I’ll share my VS Code setup and tips 'n tricks along the way.

What people say. Recommended for setting up a modern IDE and debugging environment for Zephyr OS development.

On “The Zephyr Experience [not good]”

I like Windows in general but anything programming related is so much less of a faff in Linux, so I've tacken to put my dev environments in Docker containers. I've done this for Zephyr and it's super easy since you can start with a base image they offer that's got everything ready to go. This talk shows a bit of how that looks, but you would definitely have to take a bit of a detour into Docker first if you've never used it.

On “How do you develop and debug your Zephyr applications?”

I am looking into the same thing, and I just saw this video today: link to this video It's more about vscode integration but the presenter also uses the debugger in vscode, and he has a repo with an example configuration file. I haven't tried it yet but it seems less difficult than I thought. Other than that, the logging API in zephyr is quite nice. And well, printf/printk is always there haha
