Scott Forstall discusses the creation of the original iPhone software, sharing stories about Steve Jobs and the development team at Apple.

[Recorded June 20, 2017] This is part two of two from the CHM Live show “Putting Your Finger On It: Creating the iPhone.” Watch Part 1—Original iPhone Engineers Nitin Ganatra, Scott Herz & Hugo Fiennes: bit.ly/2tluoLN Watch the Full Show—bit.ly/2sVP10E During 2006, the year before the iPhone was introduced, it seemed that innovation in mobile devices was beginning to slip away from Silicon Valley. Wireless computing was advancing more quickly in Europe than it was in the United States. That all changed abruptly when Steve Jobs stepped onstage at Moscone Center in San Francisco and asserted he was introducing “three revolutionary products” in one package—the iPhone. How did iPhone come to be? On June 20, four members of the original development team will join historian and journalist John Markoff to discuss the secret Apple project, which In the past decade has remade the computer industry, changed the business landscape, and become a tool in the hands of more than a billion people around the world. On “Scott Forstall tells story about Steve Jobs, Microsoft, and a dead fish [video]”

He also related this story in his interview with the Computer History Museum: link to this video I'm still upset that, at 48:36, Forstall offered to give his thoughts on what we could be doing with AI that we're not, but Markoff decided to move on.

On “The iPad Awkwardly Turns 10”

…may have been trivial for most of us, it was a world of difference to 95% of consumers. ( And that is why you should not put these people into consumer tech product design ) 1 Something Steve Jobs said with regards to people dont know how to use a keyboard, but I cant find the video with Google. It was during an interview with Walt Mossberg. 2 link to this video…

On “Paul McEnroe’s role in developing the UPC barcode hasn’t been fully acknowledged”

There are two origin stories. The Verge article tells Tony's. The CHM interview tells Scott's: link to this video Given the iPhone hardware came from skunkworks iPad team (and not iPod) and the software came from the Mac team (and not iPod) I personally take Tony's claims of inventing the iPhone with a grain of salt and opportunistic when Scott was later forced out over the unrelated Apple Maps launch issues. But you should judge for yourself. It's probably not clear cut.
