Mark Thomas presents a documentary on Cornwall's history as a global communications hub, detailing undersea fiber optic cables and landing stations.

Cornwall has always been at the cutting edge of Communication, the first transatlantic radio signal was sent from here and the first satellite broadcast was received at Goonhilly Today most of the world's communications pass through Cornwall making this small county in the South West of England one of the most connected places in the world. This special documentary details how the system works and is put together. This documentary mainly features on the modern day communications systems and undersea fibre optic cables because there is almost no public record of what is actually going on. In November 2014 Edward Snowden leaked documents that pointed to Cornwall as the intercept point for GCHQ's Tempora program, this documentary also delves into the murky world of espionage and how it actually works.

A lot of the time these landing sites / buildings are a bit further inland. At the beach there is usually only a buried armoured cable leading to a concrete slab or something where it connects to underground ductwork. If you're interested in that and have an hour of time there is a youtube video1 of a local tracking these down around the Cornwall area. 1 link to this video
