Ramsey Nasser explores how to use Clojure's functional semantics and Lisp idioms in game development using the Arcadia integration for Unity.

Game development is traditionally done in object oriented languages with pervasive mutation, so how does a functional lisp like Clojure work in the same setting? The Arcadia project integrates Clojure into Unity, the industry standard game engine, to do just that. This talk will dissect a few games made in Arcadia to explore how we use Clojure's strengths to make game development radically different. Through Ramsey's talk you'll see concrete examples of how to use Clojure's functional semantics and lisp idioms in a game development context. github.com/arcadia-unity/Arcadia

What people say. Recommended as a great talk on using Clojure and Arcadia for rapid iteration in game development.

On “Is Clojure a reasonable option for games?”

Arcadia allows using Clojure on top of Unity and there are a few real world games built with it. The author recently gave a talk about it. Long story short is that it's perfectly suitable for real world games, but there are limitations on the size of the game. Here's a getting started walkthrough for using it. ClojureScript also works fine for small web games with stuff Js libraries like Pixi. Here's a game I made with a friend for a hackathon.

On “Is Clojure a reasonable option for games?”

There was a good talk at Clojure/North about developing Unity games with Arcadia: fn and Games To give a brief and unfair summary (you should watch the talk, it's good): Clojure is fantastic for rapid iteration with a live-reloading game dev environment. However, there's a performance ceiling that's a bit lower than other game dev environments. Which might be totally okay! If you're making a game like Candy Crush or something without a ton of objects on screen at once, you'll be fine. If you want to make the next Modern Warfare, you may want to choose a different tool.
