Doug Gregor discusses the design and implementation of ABI stability in Swift and its integration with LLVM.

2022 LLVM Developers' Meeting llvm.org/devmtg/2022-11/ ------ Implementing Language Support for ABI-Stable Software Evolution in Swift and LLVM Speaker: Doug Gregor ------ Slides: llvm.org/devmtg/2022-11/slides/Keynote2-ImplementingLanguage… ----- Unlike its peer languages, Swift has made the deliberate decision to embrace a stable Application Binary Interface (ABI) along with native code compilation, such that separately-compiled software modules can evolve independently without breaking binary compatibility. Come learn about the impact that a stable ABI has on the design of a programming language and its implementation in LLVM. ----- Videos Edited by Bash Films: BashFilms.com

…only for executable size. The slow compile time is mostly attributed to its slow type checking from its complex type system, which is unrelated to specialization. The main benefit (or rather, requirement) that makes Swift use this method is that it allows for ABI stability, something many languages struggle with.
