Cloud and DevOpsKubernetesNetworking and protocols

An explanation of how Kubernetes services work under the hood, covering ClusterIP, NodePort, LoadBalancer, and external traffic policies.

Services are one of the key Kubernetes primitives you need to understand to glue microservices together and expose your applications outside of the cluster. The Service resource provides an abstract way to expose an application running on a set of Pods as a network service. Sounds simple, but what’s the difference between a Cluster IP, Node Port, and Load Balancer service? And how do all these abstractions translate to real under the covers networking behavior? This short video explains all this and more! In the video you’ll learn: * How pods consume services within the cluster (Cluster IPs). * The different ways a service can be consumed outside of the cluster (Node Ports, Load Balancers, and Service IP advertisement). * What is External Traffic Policy and how does it impact a service? * How Services and Network Policy interact. * How all this works under the covers in concrete networking terms. * What differences Calico’s native service handling capabilities bring to the picture compared to kube-proxy. On “pod networking (CNIs) vs services (iptables) - why?”

For a high-level visualization of Kubernetes networking, I recommend this video by the Calico folks.

I found this video from the Calico team super-helpful to understand all those topics you mentioned.

Noob help: Exposed service only works when accessed on node hosting the pod Apologies if this is not the right place, I'm currently learning Kuberneters by following u/geerlingguy 's tutorial. He uses minikube to setup cluster but I wanted to create cluster myself it so I can learn the nits and grits of it. However I'm stuck at this issue, when I create a service it gets created successfully but externally it can only be accessed when accessing it via the IP/DNS of node hosting that pod, I can see that other nodes are listening on that port (netstat -l) but external devices are not able to access it on other nodes. So far this is what I did to setup cluster: kubeadm init I tried ch…
