Alessandra Sierra traces the history, design, and impact of the Component library for managing state and lifecycle in Clojure.

The Component library is a modest 200 lines of Clojure code, but since its first release in 2013 it has had an outsized influence, spawning dozens of extensions, variations, and ports to other languages. This talk will trace the history of this pattern, from its predecessors and influences, to its evolution within the community, and finally some thoughts about how it succeeded (or not) at its goals. Biography Alessandra Sierra is the co-author of Practical Clojure (Apress 2010) and ClojureScript: Up and Running (O'Reilly 2012). Her open-source contributions include clojure.test, tools.namespace, and Component. She is a Principal Engineer at Nubank. Recorded Nov 13, 2025 in Charlotte, NC at Clojure/Conj 2025.
