Rohin Francis interviews Sci-Hub founder Alexandra Elbakyan and explores the ethics, history, and financial models of the academic publishing industry.

Should academic research be behind paywalls? Researchers and peer reviewers earn nothing for their work, and yet academic publishers boast enormous profit margins every year from subscription fees to journals. Especially during a global pandemic, is it right for scientific research to be pay-to-read? Sci-Hub is an illegal website that offers almost all academic publications for free, created by Alexandra Elbakyan, who I interview in this video. Aaron Swartz, like Alexandra, felt that information should be freely available on the Internet. He ended his own life after being charged with wire fraud, because he illegally downloaded academic articles from JSTOR. What is the way forward? Pre-prints? Researchgate? Have your say below. A huge thank you to Alexandra Elbakyan and Rachel Atwood (@racatiwood) for giving up their time so generously on two occasions (due to Zoom failing the first time). We talked for a while longer, and whether you agree with what Alexandra's doing or not, her accomplishments are quite staggering. Thank you also to translations25 (I don't know her actual name!) on Fiverr who did a great job translating the recording back for the subtitles. If there are any errors in the transcript that's from me editing it down incorrectly. > That pirate bay and scihub are still around, that their authors are walking around freely Let's not equate these sites. scihub gives people what they are likely already paid for. Academic publishing business is a fraud. link to this video (recent video on the topic that I liked)

On “FBI subpoenaed Apple for data of Sci-Hub founder”

Science Publisher Elsevier's reported profit margin is 38%, compared to Apple's 21% – there's lot of cash at stake for them and a big warchest to defend it For anyone looking to understand the background on the science publishing industry, how it ended up this way and why they will fight Sci-Hub so aggressively, I found this discussion really informative: link to this video

…ckages to build the initial reputation and then monopolize the entire industry for decades. It's interesting how the model works by rip off the taxpayers twice (by publishing and access) while still peer-review process is free (from money, not credit). …siness model as a whole is a legacy institution based on earlier monopoly by a charlatan named Maxwell 2. He basically lured scientist by shiny hotels+extra packages to build the initial reputation and then monopolize the entire industry for decades. On “Journal of Functional Programming moving to open access”

The funny thing is taxpayers ripped twice, on publishing and on access to the science and the profit goes to publication industry (not universities, research institution). If you summarize the cash flow, the publishing industry charges twice the taxpayers in addition to the science worker and research institutions costs. If you want to make your article open access, then you pay extra fees and nowadays, the university funds ripped off twice: they still bear the cost of pay-wall publishers and open access. Long story short, the whole system is rigged in favor of gatekeepers. You may check this video1 1 link to this video
