Eran Hammer introduces hapi, a configuration-centric Node.js framework designed for building robust, large-scale REST API services.

Eran Hammer of Walmart Labs joins us at PayPal to discuss their newly open sourced Node.js framework hapi: walmartlabs.github.com/hapi/ What is hapi? hapi is a rich framework for building restful API services. hapi is a configuration-centric framework in which authentication requirements, input validation, data caching and pre-fetching, developer documentation, and other essential facilities are provided out-of-the-box and enabled using simple JSON configuration objects. hapi enables developers to focus on writing reusable business logic instead of spending time with everything else.

What people say. Recommended for developers building large-scale APIs in Node.js who need a robust, configuration-centric framework.

On “Node and large-scale REST API”

There are some huge sites currently running node in production: linkedIn mobile, myspace, pieces of walmart Some of the many plusses: * Shorter development time using JS and easier to get new people up and running. * NPM modules * Speed, speed, speed There are some frameworks that can help you with REST such as hapi. Watch Eran Hammer's presentation on hapi: link to this video Node is not dependent on mongo and you can build performant systems using other other databases. You would want that piece decoupled anyway. Cache smart!

On “Diving deeper into Node. Essential packages?”

That's awesome, I use it occasionally for smaller projects because it is so fast and easy to work with as the name would imply. However, if I'm working on a gigantic API than requires speed, guaranteed up time, and was worried about CPU resources I may be paying for from Amazon for example, I would go with hapi.js 100%. Here's a good talk from the creator of hapi.js. Gives a great anecdote about running 2 servers on black Friday for WalMart, and makes lots of solid points about building opinionated frameworks. One server used Hapi, and the other used Express (as I recall). Hapi.js blew express out of the water in terms of efficiency and speed. >Hapi was able to handle all of Walm…

On “Coding Challenge I Got For a Javascript Web Developer Job”

Express is just one of the many web application frameworks for nodejs. It's definitely the largest, but not the only one. Off the top of my head stuff like Hapi, Koa, Sails, etc. Hell maybe even full stack solutions like Meteor or Derby vaguely fit this bill. Give "nodejs web application frameworks" a google and see. Each one, while having heavy overlap, have potential benefits depending on the project. The author/creator (I believe an engineer at Walmart) of Hapi gave a talk about the reason for developing a new framework to suit their needs, it was a good viewing, I think this is the one I am talking about but I may be mistaken, been a while since I saw it. Not advocating using someth…
