Scott Manley explains how a hacker team won fifty thousand dollars by successfully hacking a Department of Defense satellite during DefCon.

DefCon is one of the world's most famous hacker conventions, it's been taking place in Las Vegas since the early 1990's and I've been to a few in the days before I had children. This year a collaboration with the Department Of Defense had a competition involving hacking of satellites, to be clear the headline Hack-A-Sat event was a structured capture the flag event and this was part of a much larger Aeorspace Village which focussed on computer security in aircraft and satellites. aerospacevillage.org/defcon-28/hack-a-sat/ There's a playlist on the Air Force Research Laboratory youtube channel collecting the event, and of course youtube.com/watch?v=Mg8bdzamjQw&list=PLh81XasyS-651vRQ7DPXRX… And of course DefCon has a website with the more general event including some top quality talks about the world of information security: defcon.org/

What people say. Recommended as an interesting look into satellite security and the Hack-a-Sat competition at DEFCON.

On “How to write software that will keep working for decades without problems”

You’d be surprised! The last few DEFCON conferences have a DoD Hack-a-Sat booth. It’s one of the governments key concerns about satellites. We worry about security all the time for satellites - encrypting the uplink isn’t enough anymore. Here’s a video about the $50,000 prize offered by the DoD if you can hack their satellite at DEFCON. edit: I’m an idiot, here’s the link link to this video
