Joe Armstrong explains how to build fault-tolerant systems by letting processes fail and recover rather than trying to prevent all errors.

This presentation was recorded at GOTO Chicago 2018. #gotocon #gotochgo gotochgo.com Joe Armstrong - Principal Inventor of the Erlang Programming Language ABSTRACT Handling errors in programs is tricky. We want to write systems that work reasonable well even if there are errors in the code. This is possible, and the results have been used in production systems for many years. This talk outlines the do's and don'ts of error handling. Things you should do if you want to write fault tolerant code, and things you should not do. I will argue that making fault-tolerant and scalable systems is possible if you [...] Download slides and read the full abstract here: gotochgo.com/2018/sessions/352 twitter.com/GOTOcon linkedin.com/company/goto- instagram.com/goto_con facebook.com/GOTOConferences #ErrorHandling #Erlang #FaultTolerance #JoeArmstrong CHANNEL MEMBERSHIP BONUS Join this channel to get early access to videos & other perks: youtube.com/channel/UCs_tLP3AiwYKwdUHpltJPuA/join Looking for a unique learning experience? On “Phoenix 1.7 is View-less”

…Elixir/Erlang in terms of fault-tolerance and scalability 2. "Using the Beam to Fight COVID-19" - link ; this highlights a real-world use of Elixir and the speciality of how the BEAM works using an actor model which I found fascinating. Should get your excited about the possibilities of this language. 3. "The Do's and Don'ts of Error Handling" - link to this video ; this talk by Joe Armstrong, inventor of Erlang, again highlights the shift in thinking about error handling and failure recovery. Not Elixir specific, but since Elixir has it's roots in Erlang it's well worth listening to this talk, which is conceptual and not code-centric. None of the videos above are Phoenix or LiveView but they should…

On “Automatically Make Unit Tests”

Type checking, compile-time errors won't check if the program you wrote is correct, only that it's internally consistent. That is an entirely different thing than checking for correctness. You do need a layer of tests that actually try to prove that given some input your program actually does what it's supposed to do. That is hard to automate. Joe Armstrong(of the Erlang fame), talks about this a bit here: link to this video I've pointed to a specific timestamp, but there might be more details somewhere else in that talk.
