Ryan Fleury explains the concepts and concrete implementation of arena allocators as a simpler alternative to manual or automatic memory management.

This is a video of a talk I did in August 2023, aiming to teach the concepts described in my blog post at rfleury.com/p/untangling-lifetimes-the-arena-allocator, in a different format, with greater and more concrete detail. The small sample program—along with many other projects and examples, all built using arenas as the core memory management primitive—is included in the Digital Grove codebase, which is available to paid subscribers at rfleury.com, which is where I primarily post content these days.

What people say. Recommended as an excellent talk on using arena and region-based memory allocation strategies to simplify software design.

On “Ownership”

While it's a good model compared to... not reasoning about them at all, I don't quite agree. There are slightly more than a handful of memory safety approaches that aren't ownership and borrow-checking like Rust does, some of which involve different memory allocation strategies. See this article that lists 14 of them. I find arenas and regions particularly interesting (though I learned about arenas way before reading this article thanks to Ginger Bill's Memory Allocation Strategies articles, and also recently Ryan Fleury's Enter The Arena talk).
