Jonathan Blow demonstrates compile-time execution and metaprogramming features in his prototype programming language, Jai.

A demo of a prototype programming language. Illustrates ideas from the previous two talks. The demo itself is only about an hour and ten minutes; the rest of the video is questions & answers.

Why it's here

What people say. Recommended as an early demonstration of compile-time execution that influenced languages like Zig.

On “Constexpr is a Platform (2020)”

Jonathan Blow’s programming language allows almost anything to execute during compilation as well. It’s neat. Here’s an old video where he demonstrated this: link to this video

On “Compiled language that can interpret itself seamlessly?”

You're basically describing Jonathan Blow jet to be released programming language called Jai (link to this video He allows you to call a function either at compile time or at run time, and even demos an example where he switches if the main method over to compile time running (at around 1:17:00) the whole game at compile time. I'm not sure if he yet have hot reloading. However this is something Unity have, as a game engine using C#. They automatically serialize and unserialise your data allowing them to swap in code when you recompile it. This works some of the time. Another language that actually is release that have powerfull compile time execution is something like Zig (https://ziglang.org/#Compil…

Jonathan Blow is working on at least part of this (sorry, the only links I could find were to his videos about it) link to this video

On “Compile Time C++ Snake Game (2016)”

Sounds like what Jonathan Blow demoed in his new programming language JAI: link to this video Execute a invaders game with OpenGl while compiling and embedding the score in the code (Just a demo, the idea is to replace makefiles with compile time execution, etc.)

On “What Makes the Zig Programming Language Unique?”

> Zig's use of comptime is fairly revolutionary in a c-like language Not revolutionary. Before Zig came out, which was 2016, there was Jonathan Blow talking about and arguably repopularizing it. Lots of people (who knows how many developers) and languages were influenced by him too. 2014, Jonathan Blow, who made lots of videos and gave lots of talks, before going on to officially promote Jai (2016). And it appears he was playing around with prototypes much earlier and talking about it (from 2014). link to this video (Demo: Base language, compile-time execution)
