A tour of a 1950s Otis Autotronic elevator machine room, showcasing relay-based automation before microcontrollers.

I have been wanting to film one of these for years. Enjoy.

What people say. Recommended as a fascinating look at complex automation systems built with relays, cams, and vacuum tubes before microcontrollers.

Automation before MCUs Here's what goes on behind the scenes to make an elevator work. I wish I could freely use expletives here to describe my emotions! This is a crazy system of relays, cams, and clutches. And even some vacuum tubes, which I suppose are AC to DC rectifiers. On this subreddit, we toss around terms like MCU, HAL, RTOS, GPIO, Flash, etc. Man, the guys who designed and (to this day) maintain this crazy system must have a jargon that is totally different.
