  • An opinion. It argues one side of a question engineers disagree on.

Adam Warski demonstrates how to build asynchronous and concurrent applications in Scala using direct-style programming instead of monadic effects.

While some great solutions, like the cats-effect and ZIO libraries, provide the tooling for building asynchronous and concurrent applications, direct-style complements the Scala offering when it comes to backend development, modeling complex business domains, transforming data pipelines, and more. Adam Warski, Chief R&D Officer and co-founder of SoftwareMill, showed the effort we’ve made to make direct-style Scala a reality and something you can use in production. He demonstrated a working example of an application written in a direct-style and presented how it works with front-end development. scalar-conf.com/ Scalar Conference 2025 powered by SoftwareMill #scalarconf

On “I'm trying to make a roadmap to learn Scala for backend”

Here is my 5 cents: Scala doesn’t have one mega framework that everyone uses (like Spring in Java), instead, we have a set of quite different ecosystems: Actor stack: - Apache Pekko (OS fork of Akka) - actor framework, and ecosystem around it. It’s a very mature ecosystem, with many modules that allow you to build anything from a simple HTTP server to a distributed system that runs on multiple nodes. Functional stack: - Typelevel ecosystem / Cats - a set of libraries, that provide a broad range of tools in a functional style. It’s quite mature as well, with many libraries covering different needs, including async runtime, HTTP servers/clients, streaming, etc. Requires a good understand…
