What people say. Engineers reference this interview for insights into Tesla's manufacturing philosophy, structural batteries, and the difficulties of scaling production.

On “Tesla orders its first 8k-ton Cybertruck casting machine”

Its not that much faster but Tesla claimed it removes 100s of robots and an incredibly long error prone assembly line. Also, when you weld lots of parts together you have tolerances stack up. Tesla developed its own aluminum that does not need to be heat-treated. It might still need some finishing, but not a very complex process. Check out this video of Musk and Sandy Munro (former Chief Engineer at Ford) talking about it: link to this video

On “The Cost of Shadow Work”

…stomer suffers until one automaker breaks the mold and start to differentiate themselves by building in house and having a tighter feedback loop to provide the best quality. Here's how it went down at Tesla straight from the horse's mouth. I remember the skeptics thought he was crazy for bringing this in house but it seems to have worked out. 1: link to this video…

On “-2000 Lines of Code”

I heard Elon Musk state in an interview that they gave every new line of code 1 point and every deleted line of code 2 points so clearly at least Tesla seems to value fewer lines of code. Reference: link to this video

At least in the vid on that page link to this video it seems Musk is trying his best. Sadly I'm not a Tesla owner but my Apple stuff works well.

On “Michael Burry of ‘The Big Short’ reveals a $530M bet against Tesla”

> I think the hardest part about vehicle manufacturing, which is the issue Tesla seems to run into repeatedly, is dependable mass production. Musk agrees substantially. He says prototypes are fun and easy and it's the mass production scaling that is the most hell.0 0 link to this video

Any source for that? He sure seems to know very fine detail of almost anything related to the product. See for example: Everyday Astronaut recent Musk interview: link Munro interview with Musk: link to this video There are also other examples where Musk talks about things it's hard to imagine of him even being aware of if he's not building anything.

On “Tesla is outrunning the supply chain crunch”

…beyond their initial targets. However that experience did teach them that their design was flawed and for future vehicles after Model 3 they did switch to large castings anyway rather then traditional welding of stamping. If you are interested in the flaws of the initial Model 3, see this interview with Elon and Sandy Munro where the discuss this: link to this video First they had two casting in the back for the wheel area, then moved to one. Now they are moving to replace the whole front. So the new car designs will be two big castings connected by a structural battery pack (yes its removable). Here you see the changes: link The new design: link Example casting: link Here the first press in oper…

On “Microsoft to Acquire Activision Blizzard”

…nobody making Tesla seats. Would anybody be surprised if they start outsourcing that soon, given that they now have enough volume to attract third party suppliers and seat manufacturing is certainly not their competitive edge? I doubt this will happen. Here is the reason they started making seats themselves as explained by the big cheese himself: link to this video Given what happened when they worked with supplier last time, I doubt they would want to give up the ability to innovate by going back to a supplier even if they are big. Furthermore, I think suppliers might not be chomping at the bit to work with Tesla anymore. When the Model 3 was being developed, that insanely large preorder volumes caus…

On “Musk’s first email to Twitter staff ends remote work”

I mean, I don't think the dumb tunnel under vegas is good evidence of not being a brilliant engineer. He obviously has a very deep understanding of engineering type shit as well as engineering management01. He's got engineer brain! Engineer brain can make you do a lot of really stupid shit even if you're a great engineer. That being said I absolutely don't think he's playing 10D chess, he's got a few big Ws and it's gone to his head in a disastrous way. He can be a brilliant engineer/engineering manager and a total fucking idiot at the same time. 0 link to this video 1 link
