Ian Hobson introduces Rust to audio developers, exploring its suitability for real-time audio applications and integration with existing C++ codebases.

Rust is a relatively new systems programming language which is quickly developing into an alternative to C++ for realtime audio applications. Starting with the basics, we’ll quickly get up to speed with everything needed to write audio applications in Rust, explore some of its pros and cons, and how to make use of it in existing codebases.

What people say. Recommended for developers looking to get into audio engineering and DSP with Rust, particularly integrating with JUCE.

On “Question regarding audio unit [AU] creation for DAWs”

Hey I’m also looking to get into this and have become interested in Rust specifically recently. There was a talk by Ableton’s Ian Hobson at the Roli Audio Developer Conference about using Rust for audio development. I think in his example, he includes his Rust code in a JUCE project as a dependency. I’m a total noob at audio dev, I’m sure others will know of more resources. Maybe, if you’re interested, we could collaborate on some kind of simple project?

So I took a bit of a detour so haven’t any audio docs at hand. But I’m due to return so can update you with anything I come across if that works for you? These are a few things I do have at hand: This one has a GitHub repo that accompanies it - link to this video A simple oscillator (some docs on related things like webrtc too) - https://rustwasm.github.io/wasm-bindgen/examples/web-audio.html An example of using a worklet (the preferred w way to interface with wasm imo) - https://github.com/the-drunk-coder/ruffbox
