Anthony Cowley demonstrates a PR2 robot using a Kinect sensor to recognize, localize, and grasp moving objects on a conveyor belt.

We have developed software that allows a Willow Garage PR2 fitted with a Microsoft Kinect sensor to recognize and localize objects at 20Hz, then plan collision-free arm motions to pick up a variety of objects carried by a conveyor belt at over one foot per second. The available objects were first imaged using the Kinect sensor to provide a reference, then the robot was taught how to grasp the objects by having a human demonstrate suitable grips. The human demonstrates one or two grips, and the robot adapts those grips to the object's position and orientation based on information coming from the perception system. Belt speed, location, and dimensions are tracked by the robot as it runs. Anthony Cowley (acowley@seas.upenn.edu) Benjamin Cohen (bcohen@seas.upenn.edu) Collaborators: Will Marshall, C.J. What people say. Shared as a demonstration of Haskell's suitability for real-world robotics and perception systems.

On “Abstractions for the Functional Roboticist with Anthony Cowley at NY Haskell”

The next time anyone says _anything_ about Haskell not being suitable for one or another thing, direct them to this talk! Here's a video of one of the robots discussed doing its thing: link to this video On Wednesday, October 30, Paul Hudak will speak at NY Haskell on "Functional Reactive Programming for Musical User Interfaces". I'm really excited about this one, and in the practical realm, I sincerely hope his talk will give Anthony's a run for its money :-) http://www.meetup.com/NY-Haskell/events/143452712/
