SecurityExploits and vulnerabilities

Howard Payne and Deviant Ollam discuss the security vulnerabilities of standardized physical keys used in commercial buildings and elevators.

This is our HOPE talk. The official recording was borked but Nite0wl was awesome and pulled it from the stream archive somehow! I edited it and where we are!

Why it's here

What people say. Recommended for its fascinating look into physical security weaknesses and how common keys bypass locks.

The moral equivalent of "admin, password" happens all the time with physical locks. With physical goods, the key is often sold with a default bitting. (Which is the data embodied in the key equivalent to the password.) That's because just ordering the default is often cheaper, and the contractor will often just opt for the cheapest option. It wouldn't surprise me if this also happened with combination locks. link to this video
