Girish Kolanthra shares Capital One's transition from imperative Java and Spring to functional programming with Scala, including their training approach.

Our Scala Journey by Girish Kolanthra (Capital One) The talk is about our team journey from imperative programming using Java and Spring to introducing functional programming using Scala in a large financial services company. We will cover both the evolution of the technologies we used as well as our approach to teaching our engineers Functional Scala. Bio: Girish is a lead software engineer in the Core Modernization group at Capital One. He has a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science and Engineering and has been building software in fintech since 1999. Prior to becoming fascinated with Functional Programming in 2016, Girish worked mostly with Java and its surrounding ecosystem. He started the functional programming journey with tools like RxJava and is now a strong proponent of FP with Scala. On “Introducing effects systems S.A. ZIO at work?”

>Basically, how do I assure my team that it's stable enough to use in production? ZIO is currently being used in production by many companies (check out the list of public adopters https://github.com/zio/zio#adopters). Personally, I'm working with ZIO at Capital One (check out this video from my coworker, Girish) where, needless to say, they take safety, correctness and resilience very seriously. While there are many other reasons why ZIO could be considered production-ready, simply showing whomever needs to be convinced that it's already being used in production by large companies is often quite persuasive. Beyond that, it sounds like you're aware of the other safety benefits functiona…

Since discovering ZIO, I've pitched it (successfully! 🎉 ) to every company I worked for. It just became too painful to use anything else. In addition to pointing to industry use (which was more difficult at the beginning), I've found that identifying and translating some particularly complex and error-prone chunks of code over to ZIO, in an example PR or proposal document, has been quite effective. Of course, this depends on whether or not the decision-makers are technical. As to your questions, I can't speak too specifically to my current pos…
