What people say. Recommended as a classic software engineering parody that perfectly captures the early hype and reality disconnect of MongoDB and NoSQL.

Ah yes the "web scale" meme that's as old as the web. I bet they also use MongoDB / NoSQL since it's web scale lol.

…fine(ish), splitting databases is not. By adding a second database: - You lose the ability to perform ACID transactions. - You lose referential integrity. - You lose PITR. These are major downsides. If someone suggested you to use a database for your new project that does not support even one of these, you would (hopefully) dismiss their advice (link to this video To make things worse, it adds a ton of complexity: - deployment & permission management is twice as complicated - keeping database schemas in sync is a challenge - comparing database states is time consuming A non-technical problem that emerges over time: - different databases / schemas adopt different conventions because they are seen…

On “Sql EF to no-SQL”

Saying you need MongoDB because of scalability is literally a trope - link to this video If you don’t know what to do, use the thing the rest of your company is familiar with. Don’t use your company as a Guinea pig to test some new technology unless you have an actual need. Not an imagined one. I’ve been burned to many times by inheriting someone’s project with a needlessly unique architecture because them ‘trying something new’ was with more than my time maintaining their crap shoot of a code base. If you have ‘document’ like data then by all means store it in a JSON column, SQL supports that.

I mean, it should be fine as long as it's used with Mongo, because Mongo is webscale.

I don't like MySQL either. But it's probably the perfect choice. Or perhaps you think something webscale1 is required? 1 link to this video
