Luis von Ahn explains how Duolingo uses human computation to translate the web for free while helping users learn languages.

Luis von Ahn, the man who brought the world CAPTCHA and reCAPTCHA unveiled his newest and most innovative project to date: Duolingo. How can you translate the entire internet and do it for free? Duolingo will be a revolutionary product in which millions of internet users from around the world will work together to translate the internet and learn a new language at the same time. All for free. Luis von Ahn is the A. Nico Habermann Professor of Computer Science at Carnegie Mellon University. He builds systems that combine humans and computers to solve large-scale problems that neither can solve alone. About TEDx, x = independently organized event In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

On “Ask HN: Can I help you be more awesome today? (No strings. Inquire within.)”

First thing: Watch this video from Luis von Ahn link to this video He is the creator of reCAPTCHA and working on a translation solution which answers your question (regarding how to get people to eagerly do work for your community) pretty eloquently. Regarding your specific user engagement problem... I would venture to say that the problem you're solving here is not clear. You describe what your site can DO! But not what your site DOES for me. In other words, you're solving problems. Not providing solutions. This blog post from Dave McClure is pretty relevant here, too: link Despite the aggressive tone of the article, I think there's a good insight on how you should be "pitching" on your website's la…

On “Luis von Ahn (creator of CAPTCHA and Duolingo) Reddit AMA”

I am currently using Duolingo to learn Spanish and I find it quite amazing. It offers a great interface and I love the gaming elements. It's by far one of the best web applications I have used in a long time. So kudos to Luis von Ahn and the team! I recommend watching his TedX talk (the mind boggling thing from the presentation is: English Wikipedia could be translated in 80 hours if 1 million people used Duolingo!) link to this video
