This video talks about why using generative AI tools as a student programmer is probably a not a great idea—useful to a skilled developer, but as a student, not your friend. *** Welcome! I post videos that help you learn to program and become a more confident software developer. I cover beginner-to-advanced systems topics ranging from network programming, threads, processes, operating systems, embedded systems and others. My goal is to help you get under-the-hood and better understand how computers work and how you can use them to become stronger students and more capable professional developers. About me: I'm a computer scientist, electrical engineer, researcher, and teacher. I specialize in embedded systems, mobile computing, sensor networks, and the Internet of Things. I teach systems and networking courses at Clemson University, where I also lead the PERSIST research lab. What people say. Recommended as a convincing argument against students using generative AI to delegate their programming homework.

…their own performance. Sorber argues (fairly convincingly, with examples) that ChatGPT generates defective, nonworking, or noncompliant code. Further, that the point of the homework assignments in these "How to Program in C" courses is ... to learn to program in C. And that "delegating" that work to ChatGPT is counter to the point of the course. link to this video Since I have repeatedly seen questions like "Can anyone tell me why this code I copied from ChatGPT isn't working?", this seems to me to be worthy of an entry in whatever FAQ exists. Do we have such a resource? Is it possible to make one?…
