Martin Odersky discusses the evolution of implicits in Scala, lessons learned, and how Scala 3's givens replace them.

This presentation was recorded at YOW! 2020. #GOTOcon #YOW yowcon.com Martin Odersky - Creator of Scala & Professor at EPFL in Lausanne, Switzerland RESOURCES twitter.com/odersky people.epfl.ch/martin.odersky linkedin.com/in/odersky ABSTRACT I talk about the history of how Scala's implicits evolved, about some of the mistakes we could have avoided in hindsight, and about aspects that I believe we got right. I then present the new system of givens in Scala 3, which replaces implicits. This system fixes most of the existing issues, increases safety and predictability and offers some exciting new possibilities to structure and modularize code. On “Scala 3.4.0 and 3.3.3 LTS released!”

Scala 2 implicits were many things, and an "implicit def" had little to do with an "implicit class", and even less with an "implicit val". Here's a talk about why they were changed, might provide you with some explanations: link to this video
