Joscha Bach presents an AI and cognitive science perspective on how consciousness, selfhood, and mental representation can arise in computational systems.

media.ccc.de/v/35c3-10030-the_ghost_in_the_machine An Artificial Intelligence Perspective on the Soul Artificial Intelligence gives us a uniquely fascinating and clear perspective at the nature of our minds and our relationship to reality. We will discuss perception, mental representation, agency, consciousness, selfhood, and how they can arise in a computational system, like our brain. Cognitive Science describes our mind by identifying it as a particular kind of machine, a generally intelligent computer built from a nervous system embedded into the body of a social primate. Intelligence can be understood as a system's ability to create models, usually in the service of regulating the interaction of this system with its environment. But how does such regulation give rise to a sense of self and conscious awareness? This is the fifth installment on the series From Computation to Consciousness, which covers philosophy of mind, epistemology, the nature of consciousness, the emergence of social structure and the relationship between mind and universe using concepts from computer science and Artificial Intelligence. What people say. Highly recommended for its fascinating and dense computational model of the mind and consciousness.

On “Discovering How the Brain Works Through Computation”

Yesterday I watched a fascinating talk The Ghost in the Machine by AI researcher Josha Bach. He claims that computational math is enough to support the conscious thought, both in living things and simulated environments. The whole talk is densely packed with ideas and concepts (for example nice illustration of concepts behind back-propagation NNs at 19:20). Here 0 he lays out his current model for mind. I have no idea what to make of it, but the whole talk is incredibly lucid and contains zero fluff or BS (unlike linked article). 0 link to this video

On “Philosopher Philip Goff answers questions about panpsychism”

Joscha Bach has an interesting take on how to combine idealism with materalism. See for example his 'The Ghost in the Machine' talk at 35C3: link to this video

On “Joscha Bach: Artificial Consciousness and the Nature of Reality [video]”

He is definitely one of the most interesting people to listen to when it comes to AI, Intelligence and Philosophy. I've seen him in Leipzig on CCC events in the past, here are some of his other talks: * Computational Meta-Intelligence (32C3): link * Machine Dreams (33C3): link * The Ghost in the Machine (35C3): link to this video He also did a very interesting podcast episode with Fefe and Frank from alternativlos! On “What if consciousness is a field that surrounds us and our brain is an antenna?”

I also believe that in order to make progress it is important to accept those things that are established as scientific fact even if they counter intuitive or hard to accept. With respect to consciousness, Joshua Bach has an interesting view: link to this video
