Richard Hamming delivers his famous lecture on how to do important work, choose significant problems, and build a successful research career.

I have given a talk with this title many times, and it turns out from discussions after the talk I could have just as well have called it "You and Your Engineering Career," or even "You and Your Career." But I left the word "Research" in the title because that is what I have most studied. From the previous chapters you have an adequate background for how I made the study, and I need not mention again the names of the famous people I have studied closely. The earlier chapters are, in sense, just a great expansion, with much more detail, of the original talk. This chapter is, in a sense, a summary of the previous chapters. Introduction Hamming’s experience Newton observed...if other people fought as had as he did they would get the same results Great people believe they can do great work You have to work on problems which can become important Working with your door closed or open You have to make success either by inverting the problem or changing the problem The race is not to the swiftest Fundamentals What aspects of the speaker can you adapt? Earning the freedom to work Is the effort to be a great person worth it? End * NPS Hamming portal: nps.edu/hamming * NPS course site: cle.nps.edu/portal/site/hamming

I prefer Richard Hamming’s series: link to this video “ I have given a talk with this title many times, and it turns out from discussions after the talk I could have just as well have called it "You and Your Engineering Career," or even "You and Your Career." On “Things 10x People Do”

This reads a lot like Hamming's talk You and Your Research applied to programming. It's the last lecture in a wonderful 31-lecture course, about maths, computers, physics, technology, illustrated through Hamming's life. He'd spend his lunch hours chatting with people at Bell Labs, asking them if they were working on the most important problems in their field, and if not, why not?! link to this video

“If what you are doing is not important, and if you don't think it is going to lead to something important, why are you working on it?” — Richard Hamming link to this video

On “Ask HN: Good books on philosophy of engineering?”

It is a great book, and it includes an amazing essay by him titled You and Your Research 01 - which explains why it is important to "always be learning". 0 - link 1 - link to this video (lecture version)
