  • An opinion. It argues one side of a question engineers disagree on.

Advanced. Deep dive for people who know the field.

George Hotz introduces QIRA, a timeless debugger that records execution traces to speed up exploit development and reverse engineering.

George Hotz, comma.ai Forget reversible debugging, why is it that the concept of time exists in debugging at all? Viewing execution as a timeless trace, the open source tool QIRA(qira.me) attempts to move debugging into a new paradigm. Battle tested in CTFs, I will be presenting the tool and showing off a 10x speedup in exploit development cycle. What people say. Recommended as an interesting look at record-and-replay debugging paradigms for reverse engineering.

USENIX Enigma 2016 - Timeless Debugging Similar to rr, this is a new type of debugger that applies the git version control paradigm to debugging. Each instruction can be thought of a "commit", the qemu virtualization system is used to run the program and log all the necessary data. It also uses capstone for disassembly. I'm very interested in replacing gdb, I've looked into the scriptable plan9 acid debugger as well as rr, and just learned about this recently. Anyone have interesting alternative debuggers to share?
